Leipzig

We then travelled to Leipzig, which thanks to ArtReview has seen a great deal of new visitors seeking out the vibrant contemporary art scene. Leipzig is home to the Spinneri, the biggest cotton mill in Europe which went out of business in the late 80's. The mill became derilict, run down and then artists moved in. Now over 100 artists have their studios and it's home to 10 art galleries.

The group show at PIEROGI was excellent.
Andreas Gehrke - Quiescent
His photographs from the last 10 years, and is according to him "A feeling of the urban landscape".
Dawn Clements - Conditions of Desire
Is a continuation of her large-scale illustrative work. The panels form a mock up of a real room and link to themes from movies and TV soap operas. The piece "Color Oval" ballpoint pen, ink and gouache on paper was the highlight of her work. The drawing is focused on female figures and has scattered text throughout. There's not one perspective, there's hundreds.
Stefan Roloff - One + One
This interactive installation consisting of interior components of a typical GDR home in the 1970's. On the walls are two films by Roloff made in 1982 of military men at the border (the wall) doing their job. The films act as windows outside the small boxed room, into the world outside.
Roloff is interested in the possibility and option of border-crossing. This installation makes it possible to go through imagary passge ways and influence the passing of time.
By enabling the viewer to get fully involved and feel part of the work allows for the piece to grow in the viewers mind. It's more than an art, it's an experience.

Strange realistic photos of blonde-haired healthy looking men and women with ping pong bats featured regularly over their genitalia.

Maix Mayer @ Galerie EIGEN + ART
In the film "Habitat", Mayer has made a film that questions urbanity and themes of perceptions. He constructs work based on his interest in the methods of science and language systems of cinema, as well as the fine arts. The video is set on two islands in two cultural areas which the protagnist visits and which create two complementary habitats of northen and southern hemisphere. The hero of the film acts as a modern archeologist of the special images of societ, while we watch him and us during it's decoding.
The visual imagery of the film was incredible, and this too was reflected in the accompanying photographic images.
