Koeln

Got back from a lovely week away around Germany. We begun in Koeln which is one of the many places I visited last summer. It makes me happy and think of the song by the Ghost Mice. It is still lovely and the Dom is still incredible. This time I managed to climb up the 509 steps to the top.

Inside is a new stained glass by Gehard Richter, based on the 4096 Farben series. He follows on a great line of artists that have created works for cathedrals but unfortunately his work has not been recieved as well as expected. A German archbishop has described it as "degenerate" - a term used widely by the Nazi regime in its persecution of artists.

For me, it manages to be spiritual without being religious, which is a challenge, especially in the surroundings of such a strongly religious place.
The Serpentine Gallery have an exhibition by Richter (first solo show in 4 years in the UK) starting in September.
